October 8, 2009 was a very exciting day for BCA. I took 8 students to our first ever quiz bowl match. The students boarded a SCAT and set off for Upper Sandusky not know if we would even be able to answer even one question right. We had not practiced as a team and had not even seen a set of buzzers. All of the students were very nervous, but after our first win of 90-20 over Fostoria, the kids were on a roll. They went on to defeat New Reigel 55-50 with a comeback question from Eliana B. and then they won 100-90 over St. Wendelin in overtime after Connie S. answered 2 in overtime. I have never seen the students so pumped up about anything. They were jumping up and down and celebrating such a great win. Highlights of the day were Connie’s 12 correct answers and Adam N’s 7 correct answers. Other students in attendance were Tyler B., Spencer D., Ethan C., Dinah A., and Nick P., all of whom were a great help to the team.

BCA received a grant from the Council for Economic Education through funding from the United States Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement. The grant was for BCA to continue the financial literacy program we began 3 years ago. Team 3 has had our first “pay day” this week. It has been our experience that the younger students struggle with pay checks and writing checks for rent. Usually they all need help at once. This week, they all listened very well and it made the experience a little more bearable.
Next week will be their first experience with writing checks. They will have to pay their rent for the first time, and I fear some of them are going to be a little short of cash. I hope all goes well. In previous years, student who lost their seats learned quickly what to do to keep their chairs. Good luck to all of them next year when they pay their first rent.
