Good Morning!

Way to GO BUCKS!!!

Let’s Ripple!!

Ripple Effect: (Quoted from The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews)

The remaining eighty fighting men lifted their voices to match that of their leader. “Charge! Charge!” they cried tymbling over the wall into a history about which most people in our country have never heard.

For when the Confederate troops saw Chamberlain, the leader of the opposition, mount the wall they immediately stopped, unsure as to what was happening. And when the Colonel pointed his sword toward them and commanded his men to charge, they turned and ran. Many threw down their loaded weapons.

The rebels were certain that these were not the same soldiers they had been facing. Surely men have been reinforced, they thought. A beaten regiment would not charge. In less than five minutes, Chamberlain had his sword on the collarbone of a Confederate captain.

“You, sir, are my prisoner,” he stated.

The man turned around a fully loaded Navy Colt revolver and offered it to Chamberlain. “Yes sir,” he answered. “I am.”

Within five minutes, that ragged group of eighty men under Chamberlain’s command-without any ammunition-captured over four hundred soldiers of the enemy.

It is an amazing story, isn’t it? And absolutely true. But here’s what most people never consider….

On Tuesday, we’ll share how this story ripples.

Quote of the day :

“Heroism is latent in every human soul – However humble or unknown, they (the veterans) have renounced what are accounted pleasures and cheerfully undertaken all the self-denials – privations, toils, dangers, sufferings, sicknesses, mutilations, life-”

Joshua Chamberlain

Joke of the Day: (Thank you to Ginny Faeth for supplying the jokes of the day!)

Q: What kind of flower buys Father’s day cards?

A: A sunflower.

Thought of the day : Freedom

“People are as freee as they want ot be.” – James Baldwin

HOw free do you want to be? Has a bad habit or unhealthy relationship taken away your freedom? YOu can get it back. If you need help breaking a habit or ending a relationship, talke to a trusted adult. But mostly, believe in yourself. You know you can make it on your own. Oprah Winfrey says, “The only thing that can free you is the belief that you can be free.”

Today…if you have let a habit or relationship run your life, start taking back your freedom.

Question of the day :

Many feathers to help it fly,
a body and a head,
but it’s not alive,
you determine how far it goes,
you can hold it in your hand,
but it is never thrown.

Yesterday’s Possible answers:

Life is often a volume of grief,
I need your help to turn a leaf,
My spine is stiff,
And my body is pale,
But I’m always ready,
To tell a tale.

GO BUCKS (First Game tonight!!)

Let’s Ripple!!

Ripple Effect: (Quoted from The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews)

At first, no one moved. They just stared at him with their mouths open. “Fix your Bayonets NOW!” he commanded again.

“Execute a great right wheel of the entire regiment. Swing the left first. Do it now!”

Lietenant Melcher spoke first, confused. “Sir,” he asked, “What is a great right wheel?” But the Colonel had already jumped from the wall and was moving to the next group of men. Seargeant Tozier answered the question. “He means to charge. Son. A Great Right Wheel is an all-out charge.”

Then, turning the Colonel pointed his sword directly downhill. Facing overwhelming odds, Chamberlain slashed his blade through the air and with a power born of courage and fear, the school teacher from Maine roared, “Charge! Charge! Charge!” to his men.

What do you think the soldiers were thinking when Chamberlain told them to charge?

Quote of the day :

“Every man I believe that God has given a Divine spark of soul.”

Q: What did “A” and “B” look for at the beach?

A: A “C” Gull.

Thought of the day : Challenge

“A challenge is something you haven’t done before that you work towards.” Sarah Jessica Parker

You’re facing a new situation and it scares you. Maybe you’re in a new school this year and you’re feeling lost. Maybe you’re not sure about your new teacher. Maybe there’s been a big change in your family. Whatever the situation you know you can handle it. Whatever the challenge, you can cope.

Today…face a new situation head on.

Good Morning! Happy September!!

Let’s Ripple!!

Ripple Effect: (Quoted from The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews)

Chamberlain stepped to the top of the wall in full view, crossing his arms and staring down at the advancing enemy.

The 15th and 47th Alabama with their pale, yellow-gray uniforms, now reinforced by a Texas regiment, moved up the hill as their high pitched shriek-the rebel yell-coursed up toward Chamberlain and his men. Sergeant Spear was standing at the Colonel’s feet. Sergeant Tozier, Chamberlain’s brother Tom, and Lieutenant Melcher, the flag bearer, were huddled below. “Joshua!” his brother said. “Do something! Give an order!”

Chamberlain stood there for a moment, deep in thought, quickly sorting the situation. “We can’t retreat,” he thought. “We can’t stay here.” When I am faced with the choice of doing nothing or doing something, I will always choose to act. He turned his back on the advancing rebels, looked down at his men, and said, “Fix Bayonets!”

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s excitement and think about what you would do if you were the Colonel.

Quote of the day :

The power of noble deeds is to be preserved and passed on to the future.
Joshua Chamberlain

Joke of the Day: (Thank you to Ginny Faeth for supplying the jokes of the day!)

Q: Who do all the inches follow?

A: Their ruler.

Thought of the day : Friendships

“People change and forget to tell each other.” Lillian Hellman

One day your best friend likes, the same things you do. The next day you can’t agree on anything. What happened? Change. “As children become teenagers, their interests change,” educators Larry and Cindy Putbrese explain. ”When interests change, friendships change…Many young people don’t understand this yet. They feel badly because they get left out or believe they have done something wrong. It helps to understand that changing friends is a normal, of sometimes painful, part of growing up.”

Today…accept a change in a friend.

Question of the day :

It’s the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form but fresh. What is it?

Yesterday’s Possible answers:

What won’t break if you throw it off the highest building in the world, but will break if you place it in the ocean?

1) A fall. The word “place” suggests conceptualizing a fall in this context as occurring at the edge of or just above the ocean, in which case the water would break that fall. But technically speaking, if a fall is thrown off a building – and assuming you can throw a verb – it would eventually be broken by the ground.

2) A storm, or the weather. This can mean either a violent beginning, or a sudden change. In the first sense, if “in” can be taken to mean “just above” the ocean, a storm being relocated there would be associated with an increased humidity that might bring about such a violent beginning, whereas if you cast the storm down from the top of a tall building, the resulting increase in atmospheric pressure would probably preclude such a start. In the second sense, if “in” literally means “inside of,” the weather would certainly change suddenly, that is, it would disappear, if you plunged it underwater. There would, however, be little change in the weather between the top and the bottom of a building.

3) A wave. This was my first thought, and is probably the best. A wave breaking means curling over and dissolving into foam. It can’t do that if it’s not within a larger body of water. Dropped from a building, it would just dissolve into vapor.

Let’s Ripple!!

Ripple Effect: (Quoted from The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews)

Chamberlain looked up to see the boy pointing down the hill. “They’re forming up right now. And they’ve been reinforced. Sir, there’s a lot more of them this time.”

At that moment, a messenger stumbled into their midst. Out of breath, he said, “Sir! Colonel Chamberlain, sir! Colonel Vincent is dead.”

“Are you sure, soldier?”

“Yes, sir,” he gasped. “He was shot right at the first of the fight. They were firmed up by Weeds Brigade, but now Weeeds is dead. They moved Hazlett’s Battery up top. Hazlett’s dead too.”

Chamberlain’s brother came running back. “Joshua,” he said, “We’re out! One…two rounds per man at the most. Some of the men don’t have anything at all!”

Chamberlain turned to a thin man standing on his right. It was First Sergeant Ellis Spear. “Spear,” he ordered, “tell the bosy to take ammunition from the wounded and the dead.”

“We did that last time, sir,” Spear replied. “Maybe we should think about pulling out.”

Chamberlain responded grimly, “we will not be pulling out, Sergeant. Carry out my orders please.”

“Colonel!” Sergeant Tozier sopke up. “We won’t hold them again, sir. You know we won’t!”

“Joshua!” It was his brother. “Here they come! Here they come!”

Good Morning!

Let’s Ripple!!

Ripple Effect: (Quoted from The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews)

After that fifth broken charge, Chamberlain’s younger brother, Tom, appeared with Sergeant Tozier, an old, hard-nosed soldier. Tozier had a thick wad of torn shirt stuck into a hole in his shoulder where he had been wounded.

“No help from the 83rd,” the Sergeant said. “They’re shot to ribbons and all they can do is extend the line a bit. We’re getting murdered on our flank.”

“Can we extend?” Chamberlain asked. “There’s nothing to extend,” Tom answered. “More than half our men are down.”

It was true. Chamberlain’s command had started in Bangor, Maine, six months earlier, with a thousand men. They’d started that morning with three hundred. Now they were down to eighty.

“How are we for ammunition?” the Colonel asked.

“We’ve been shooting a lot,” was his brother’s answer.

“I know we’ve been shooting a lot,” Chamberlain snapped.

“I want to know how we’re holding out. How much ammunition do we have left?”

As Tom rant ot check, a twelve-year-old lookout had climbed a tree. He yelled,

“They’re forming up again, Colonel.”

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s excitement and think about what you would do if you were the Colonel.

Quote of the day :

We pass now quickly from each other’s sight; but I know full well that where beyond these passing scenes you shall be, there will be Heaven.
Joshua Chamberlain

Joke of the Day: (Thank you to Ginny Faeth for supplying the jokes of the day!)

Q: What would you eat while watching a scary movie?

A: I scream.

Thought of the day : Good Habits

"Recall it as often as you wish, a happy memory never wears out." – Libbie Fudim

It won’t be long before school starts again (if it hasn’t already). When you think back on the summer, what is your happiest memory? When was the best time? What was your favorite thing to do? The greatest place to be? If this is a memory you share with a friend, you may want to write it down. Then make a copy for your friend.

Today…think of a happy memory from the summer.

Question of the day :

Part of the following sentence is underlined; beneath the sentence are five ways of phrasing the underlined material. Select the option that produces the best sentence. If you think the original phrasing produces a better sentence than any of the alternatives, select choice A.

Mahpiua Luta, better known for being Red Cloud, was chief of the Oglala Sioux during the 1860s.

A. for being

B. that he was

C. as being

D. to be

E. as

Quote of the day:

“If you listen to anybody but yourself you are a prime sucker. Because all anybody else ever does is make mistakes. Why should you make the same ones? Make your own mistakes. They are the best fun.” – Jimmy Breslin – Pulitzer Prize-winning Columnist, Author

Joke of the Day:

Q: How far did the witch fly?

A: – ghost to ghost.

Thought of the day: Organization

“Without discipline, there’s no life at all.” – Katharine Hepburn

Is your life a big, confusing mess? Are you constantly forgetting things, losing things, breaking things? Is your room a junkyard? Are you always late? If this sounds familiar, take Florence Kennedy’s advice: “Don’t agonize. Organize.” There are many books, articles, and audio cassettes that can help. Ask your teacher or librarian for ideas. (Even if you are already organized, you could probably be better organized.)

Today….get organized in one part of my life.

Question of the day:

English words containing the letter combinationsiioruuoraaorwworvvare rare. Can you think of one of each? Don’t suggest aardvarkas the example foraa; it’s too easy.

Quote of the day:

“I give you some advice that is now more than 2,000 years old: Love work, hate domination, and don’t get too close to the ruling class.” – Ben Bradlee – Executive Editor – Washington Post

Joke of the Day:

Q: What did the hurricane say to the island?

A: – I’ve got my eye on you.

Thought of the day: Think big!

“A lot of people told me I was never going to be anybody. But here I am.” – Rodney A. Grant

Rodney A. Grant is a Native American actor. He played Wind in His Hair in the move Dances with Wolves. For a long time, it looked as if people were right – he never would be anybody. He was born into a troubled family. He had problems with alcohol and the law. He dropped out of high school. Today he’s a move and TV star.

Today….think of all the things you know you can do and be.

Question of the day:

Lewis Carroll figured out how to change the word nose to the word chin in six moves by changing only one letter at a time. Each time you change a letter, you get an English word. Here we give you the words for Moves 2 and 3. You have to figure out the words for Moves 1, 4, and 5.

N O S E

Move 1

_ _ _ _

Move 2

C O T E

Move 3

C O R E

Move 4

_ _ _ _

Move 5

_ _ _ _

Move 6

C H I N

Yesterday’s answer:

Mom, Dad, and Sis are palindromes — words that read the same both forward and backward. Bro is not a palindrome. If you read it backwards, it’s “orb.”

Extra challenge answer: Mr. Smith could be named Bob; Mrs. Smith could be named Eve or Nan. All those names are palindromes.

Word of the day:

Epiphany (noun)

An appearance or a becoming manifest. Also frequently used as a sudden idea or brainwave.

It was in the course of performing the mundane requirements of his job at the patent office that Albert had an epiphany; perhaps, he thought to himself, that time is not a constant.

Announcements:

Mrs. S will not be here today. Mrs. Manning will be a little late.

Mohawk bus riders: Please let you parents know that you will need to be picked up at the Mohawk school in the afternoon; they will NOT be busing you to your house. They have an early dismissal on Wednesday.

Drama Club – Spring Play – practice is today, Monday from 2:00-2:45 pm. Please meet in Mrs. Santangelo’s room, room 10.

Seniors: please remember to get your pictures in to the office for the slide show. Also please turn in your biographies and your ideas for flowers, motto, song, etc.

Do you finish what you start? Or do you begin with a bang and fizzle out at the end? It’s hard to do a job or project all the way through. It’s easier to come up with excuses like “I don’t understand,” “I’m bored,” or “I don’t have enough time.” But these are only excuses, and you still have a job to do – only now it will take you longer.
