October 8, 2009 was a very exciting day for BCA. I took 8 students to our first ever quiz bowl match. The students boarded a SCAT and set off for Upper Sandusky not know if we would even be able to answer even one question right. We had not practiced as a team and had not even seen a set of buzzers. All of the students were very nervous, but after our first win of 90-20 over Fostoria, the kids were on a roll. They went on to defeat New Reigel 55-50 with a comeback question from Eliana B. and then they won 100-90 over St. Wendelin in overtime after Connie S. answered 2 in overtime. I have never seen the students so pumped up about anything. They were jumping up and down and celebrating such a great win. Highlights of the day were Connie’s 12 correct answers and Adam N’s 7 correct answers. Other students in attendance were Tyler B., Spencer D., Ethan C., Dinah A., and Nick P., all of whom were a great help to the team.

Bridges Students and Staff Reflect on the Presidential Inauguration

The inauguration of President Barak Obama was a historically significant event, that was watch by many millions throughout the United States and the world. BCA students and staff were able to watch the inauguration live as it happened. Here are some of their reactions to the inauguration of America’s first African-American president, and what they think it will mean to the future of our country.

Connie, a 10th grade student:

I thought the inauguration was very interesting, but Obama’s speech is what caught my attention. Obama did not make false promises about quickly fixing America’s issues, but he admitted that it would be hard and would take a while. Although he was a convincing and informed speaker, one could sense a lot of ethos used, though that is effective when speaking to a large crowd with different opinions on subjects.

Amanda, a 12th grade student:

In my opinion, Obama has the flair of president Kennedy, something this country hasn’t seen since. I believe that he has the drive to succeed in creating the change that this country needs, and a personality [and face] that the public loves. With the support of the people, and the perseverance to bring this country back on top, he will bring about the day of change.

Lauren, another 12th grade student:

I thought that the inauguration was interesting to see. I think that he will be a good president. I feel that he gave a wonderful speech yesterday and that he will do well as our president.

Mrs. Kohler, Team 3 Math and Science Teacher:

Obama is my guy.  I liked him in 2004 when he was just a rumor.  I like his poise and power.  He is very good with words, and can lull you into a sense of safety and peace.  I think what this is going to do for our country is to calm us; less fighting, less violence, less troops overseas.  I hope that he uses his cultural and ethnic differences to show us all that color does not matter. That success is something you work for and achieve because of your achievements instead of your skin color.  As Michelle said last night in her interview that her girls look at race differently that she and Barack do.  I don’t want his 4-8 years to be about race relations, and I am sure that he will not allow that to happen.  I just hope that he leads us like a strong silent father who speaks volumes in few words and still gets his point across.  I believe his point is practical, and I hope that our nation and other nations also see that and improve the economy because of it.

Sami writes:

I think that hard work would make America better. The honesty will make better Americans. The courage helps people take challenged and to follow dreams. The fair play will give every one a chance. Tolerance can curiosity will let people help people. Loyalty and patriotism will help America get better.

From Najee:

He required us to take responsibilities and duties to ourselves, nation and the world. So I guess he’s telling us to get involved in taking care of our country or state. Take in hard work and honesty. He expects us to do it willingly and without shame.

Jim Back, Technology Director:

I was not a supporter of President Obama in the presidential election. I am not sure his policies will take the country in the right direction, but I do agree with the fact that we need to go in another direction from where we have been traveling the last few years. I think he made some excellent points about casting aside our difference on smaller issues and concentrating together on the major issues of the day. America has a chance to lead the world again, and it is a chance we really cannot afford to squander. I may not agree with President Obama in some of his poicies and political viewpoints, but I find myself willing to at least give him a chance. Time will tell. After all, he is our President now. The people have choosen. Lets us all hope we have made the correct choice.

Dinah had this to say:

Barak Obama describes citizenship as hard work, honesty, courage, fair play, tolerance, curiosity, loyalty and patriotism. He describes these qualities as ones that have stood the test of time, and remain true still to this day. I think he also describes good citizenship and recognizing your responsibilities and duties to yourself, your country and your world. He describes these qualities as indicators of good citizenship.

Mathias:

He thinks that the citizens of the United States need to change their values. Since the economic crisis, people have given up. They have no hope for the future. We have all forgotten what can drive us to success. Things like hard work, honesty, fair play, courage, tolerance, curiosity, loyalty and patriotism. We need to remember that these are the things that have brought us to success in the past. We all think that it’s difficult. But it’s what makes us happy and what makes us successful.

Grace summed it up:

The values upon which our success depends are old, but the concept may be new for some people. We need to return to these values, because some of us have forgotten how to act with respect, honesty and courage. We need to “seize gladly” the duties that this era entails and act responsibly. When our country starts to suffer because of the way that we act, and the lack of hard work and honesty, we all suffer; our society suffers. Obama has the right idea; we need change in our country, or we will not last much longer. We need to change the way we look at things and the way we think.
