Quote of the day:

“You have the good fortune to be part of a free nation with boundless possibilities – and enough challenges and diversions to make life interesting every day….Read books. Write stories. Learn history. Enjoy life.” – David S. Broder – Columnist – Washington Post, TV panelist

Joke of the Day:

Q: when is homework not homework?

A: – When it is turned into the teacher.

Thought of the day: Try, try, try again

“The only people who never fail are those who never try.” – Ilka Chase

Many wise people have written about failure, what it means, and how to cope. Here are four more inspiring sayings:

Henry Ford: “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”

Max Beerbohm: “Failure is more interesting than success.”

Robert Kennedy: “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.”

William D. Brown: “Failure is an event, not a person.”

Today….make up your own saying about failure.

Question of the day:

Figure out what the capitalized words in Column A have in common. Then decide which one of the three lowercased words in Column B belongs with the capitalized ones.

Quote of the day:

“If you listen to anybody but yourself you are a prime sucker. Because all anybody else ever does is make mistakes. Why should you make the same ones? Make your own mistakes. They are the best fun.” – Jimmy Breslin – Pulitzer Prize-winning Columnist, Author

Joke of the Day:

Q: How far did the witch fly?

A: – ghost to ghost.

Thought of the day: Organization

“Without discipline, there’s no life at all.” – Katharine Hepburn

Is your life a big, confusing mess? Are you constantly forgetting things, losing things, breaking things? Is your room a junkyard? Are you always late? If this sounds familiar, take Florence Kennedy’s advice: “Don’t agonize. Organize.” There are many books, articles, and audio cassettes that can help. Ask your teacher or librarian for ideas. (Even if you are already organized, you could probably be better organized.)

Today….get organized in one part of my life.

Question of the day:

English words containing the letter combinationsiioruuoraaorwworvvare rare. Can you think of one of each? Don’t suggest aardvarkas the example foraa; it’s too easy.

Word of the day:

Rebuke (noun)

Quote of the day:

“I give you some advice that is now more than 2,000 years old: Love work, hate domination, and don’t get too close to the ruling class.” – Ben Bradlee – Executive Editor – Washington Post

Joke of the Day:

Q: What did the hurricane say to the island?

A: – I’ve got my eye on you.

Thought of the day: Think big!

“A lot of people told me I was never going to be anybody. But here I am.” – Rodney A. Grant

Rodney A. Grant is a Native American actor. He played Wind in His Hair in the move Dances with Wolves. For a long time, it looked as if people were right – he never would be anybody. He was born into a troubled family. He had problems with alcohol and the law. He dropped out of high school. Today he’s a move and TV star.

Today….think of all the things you know you can do and be.

Question of the day:

Lewis Carroll figured out how to change the word nose to the word chin in six moves by changing only one letter at a time. Each time you change a letter, you get an English word. Here we give you the words for Moves 2 and 3. You have to figure out the words for Moves 1, 4, and 5.

N O S E

Move 1

_ _ _ _

Move 2

C O T E

Move 3

C O R E

Move 4

_ _ _ _

Move 5

_ _ _ _

Move 6

C H I N

Yesterday’s answer:

Mom, Dad, and Sis are palindromes — words that read the same both forward and backward. Bro is not a palindrome. If you read it backwards, it’s “orb.”

Extra challenge answer: Mr. Smith could be named Bob; Mrs. Smith could be named Eve or Nan. All those names are palindromes.

Word of the day:

Epiphany (noun)

An appearance or a becoming manifest. Also frequently used as a sudden idea or brainwave.

It was in the course of performing the mundane requirements of his job at the patent office that Albert had an epiphany; perhaps, he thought to himself, that time is not a constant.

Announcements:

“There really is a lot of laughter in this world. Sometimes you have to work for it or you have to be open to it, but it’s here. This is a neat planet. Enjoy it.” – Erma Bombeck – Humor Columnist, Author

Joke of the Day:

Q: What’s black and white and blue all over?

A: – a frozen penguin.

Thought of the day : Look ahead

“You can’t turn back the clock. But you can wind it up again.” – Bonnie Prudden

Finish this sentence: “If only I hadn’t…” Most of us have regrets. In fact, you can’t undo things already done. You can’t take back words already said. You can’t turn back the clock on your life. But you can decide that today will be different. Regret is a waste of time and energy. Leave it behind. As Herbert Prochnow once said, “Our eyes are placed in front because it is more important to look ahead than look back.”

Today….don’t look back.

Question of the day :

The members of the Smith family call each other by nicknames. Mr. Smith is called Pop, Mrs. Smith is called Mom, Anna Smith is called Sis, and little Johnny Smith is called Bro. What characteristic do the nicknames for Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, and Anna Smith have in common that is not shared by Johnny Smith’s nickname?

Extra challenge:Once you’ve answered the question, think of real first names for Mr. and Mrs. Smith that have the same characteristic in common as their nicknames. (Hint: Anna’s name already has that characteristic.)

Quote of the day:

“Whatever you decide you really want to do with your life, take it very seriously…You find that by focusing on what you want to do with your life, it happens. And don’t let anything take you off course. Commit yourself early on.” – Michael Bolton – singer

Joke of the Day:

Q: Why did the elephant decide not to move?

A: — because he couldn’t lift his trunk.

Thought of the day : Working hard

“I wasn’t lucky. I deserved it.”

Mrs. Thatcher was Britain’s first woman Prime Minister. For more than ten years, she was a powerful world leader. Many successful people, especially girls and women, don’t handle their success very well. When others ask them, “How did you get where you are?” they answer, “Oh, I was lucky, I guess.” As teacher Barbara Lewis says, “Luck is just another word for work.” If you’re successful, it’s not because you’re lucky. It’s because you are talented and you work hard.

Today….take credit for your success.

Question of the day :

Which letters should replace the question marks?

A

V

D

S

?

?

J

M

Yesterday’s answer :

Head over heels

I’m feeling under the weather.

Be there in ten minutes.

The broom is standing in the corner.

Right in the middle of everything

What’s in it for me?

Sit down beside me.

Don’t overstay your welcome.

I don’t like it in here.

The sky is overcast today.

Word of the day :

recalcitrant (adj)

Showing opposition.

The soccer team was mostly made up of girls who worked well together, but there were two or three resistant and recalcitrant girls who did not respect the authority of the coach.

Quote of the day:

"Think positive…Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Just go do it." – Ernie Banks – Baseball Hall of Famer

Joke of the Day:

Q: "How does an ocean greet a beach?"

A: — by waving "hello"

submitted by Ginny F.

Thought of the day : Differences

"Beethoven and all those guys had wild thoughts." – Yo-Yo Ma

Have you ever listened to a symphony by Beethoven? Or looked at a painting by Picasso? Or read a poem by Langston Hughes, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost or Gwendolyn Brooks? When you experience the work of an artist, you get a glimpse into his or her wild thoughts. And you may find yourself having some wild thoughts of you own. Many artists turn to other artists for inspiration.

Today….appreciate (or create) a work of art.

Question of the day :

What occurs once in every minute, twice in every moment, yet never in a thousand years?

Insipid; flat; dull; unanimated.

Not wanting to sound vapid, Dierdre tried not to say "Like" and "You know" during her job interview.

Bridges Community Academy

Dona Kaufman and Judy Back are the co-founders of Bridges Community Academy established in 2004. They have been administrators of this “gifted/individualized” charter school for the past 6 ½ years.

Dona has been in education for the past 32 years. She taught junior high students for over half of her career in teaching. After 16 years of teaching Dona worked as a Graduate Assistant for Dr. Tom Southern at BGSU and received her master’s degree in Gifted Education. She was then a Gifted Education Coordinator for North Central Ohio Educational Service Center for 5 years. She also earned her administrative licensure at Findlay University in 2002. In 2004 she became the Director of BCA.

Judy has been in education for the past 18 years. She was a Gifted Intervention Specialist for twelve years for the North Central Ohio Educational Service Center. She attended Bowling Green State University to receive her masters in Gifted Education. Judy later became a Gifted Coordinator and attended Findlay University to work on an administrative licensure. In 2004 she became the Director of Academics at BCA.
Judy has been involved with Ohio Association of Gifted Children as a regional representative, then President-elect and President over the past 10 years. She has assisted OAGC with their involvement in the NAGC convention and was instrumental in defining OAGC’s restructuring.
Dona has served on the Executive Committee and Governing Board as 2nd Vice-President of OAGC. She is also the author of a book about meeting the needs of gifted children, My Child is Very Special.

Together, Dona and Judy have worked together to present their knowledge to parents and educators at OAGC, COCG, NWOCCG, OCQE and OAPCS conferences, and have also provided many district staff in-services.

Dona and Judy’s passion has always been to educate others about the needs of gifted children and to help provide appropriate educational opportunities for every individual child. If you are reading this webpage then they hope you have learned what BCA is all about. They are compassionate, yet strong leaders and they have had the ability to promote teamwork that has turned brainpower and a few dreams into reality. The evidence of their assets and their passions are in the accomplishments of the staff, students and families of Bridges Community Academy.
